Project Overview
Our craftsmen recently executed a specialist timber window refurbishment and redecoration project at the historic York House School in Rickmansworth. Working on historic architecture requires dedicated precision to restore original features, enhance window functionality, and protect external frameworks while strictly preserving the authentic character of listed buildings across Hertfordshire and surrounding areas such as St Albans.
The Work Executed
The restoration of the historic timber sash windows involved a comprehensive joinery overhauling process:
- Dismantling & Bead Removal: Carefully removed and discarded all perished parting beads before safely removing the sash windows from their box frames.
- Channel Maintenance & Box Inspection: Cleaned out the parting bead channels and thoroughly inspected all window surfaces and frame boxes for signs of timber decay.
- Resin Joinery Repairs: Restored loose or damaged window joints, mid rails, and bottom rails using the advanced Timber Care resin system, alongside repairing minor isolated areas of decay.
- Surface Preparation: Precision-sanded all previously painted internal and external woodwork surfaces to create a smooth, durable base for protective redecoration.
The Result
The original sash windows at York House School have been fully revitalised. The structural integrity of the timber is secured, operational movement is restored to smooth performance, and the repainted finish provides long-term weather protection while safeguarding the historic identity of this listed venue.
